Zahra Zuhair has been performing and teaching the dances of the Middle East
for 30 years. Zahra's repertoire includes the dances of Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, & Turkey,
specializing in Egyptian oriental dance. This specialization began with Zahra's
first research tour to Egypt in 1979, resulting in annual trips to Cairo
Egypt. Zahra conducts study tours to Egypt, and has taught at the prestigious
Ahlan Wa Sahlan Dance Festival in Cairo Egypt, produced by Raqia Hassan.
She also conducts an annual dance retreat in beautiful mountains of Idyllwild,
CA. Zahra has become one of America’s most esteemed master teachers,
and choreographers. Zahra is world renowned for her knowledge, authenticity,
and dedication to the art Middle Eastern dance. Raised in oriental dance
since a young girl, Zahra is known for her musicality, flawless technique,
and elegant style. She has trained and influenced many of today’s oriental
dance stars. She has performed in Middle Eastern embassies, nightclubs, theater,
schools, universities and museums across the US. Zahra has produced her own
instructional videos, and is featured in an instructional video produced
by IAMED, with distribution worldwide. She is the recipient of the 1999 International
Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (IAMED) Award for Best Modern Egyptian Dancer.
She has performed and taught on 4 continents, and is currently teaching dance
workshops across the country. Zahra is the founder and artistic director
of Po Na Na Dance Theater, featuring the stories, music and dances of the
Middle East. Zahra has produced several dance theater shows in the Los Angeles
area, most recently the story of Layla and Majnun ("Layla and the Madman")
and The Veils of Inanna. She is a former member of the educational
group Silk and Sand, directed by Carolyn Krueger, featuring the dances of
the Silk Route and the Arab world. Zahra is the artistic director of Ghazella
Dance Company based in Los Angeles. Zahra co-owner of Dance Garden LA, and
teaches regular classes from beginners through professionals in the Los Angeles
area.
