1- Shake it like a salt shaker:

Isolations, posture, extension and building choreography:  learn the fundamentals of faster paced tribal fusion bellydance.  Strong emphasis is placed on developing a correct posture, muscle conditioning and flexibility training. Sharp articulation emphasizing movement and rhythm. We will drill twists, locks, drops, squares, omis and shimmies working to develop the muscles in the lower abs and pelvic area to create crisp, strong hip articulation. We will then take it a step further and move on to drilling these movements within different planes of space, such as level changes and experimenting with variations on the left and right sides of the body. Special emphasis placed on drop turns and drop twists.  Students will learn how to create combinations and link them into short choreographies.  The goal is to give students the tools to more effectively help link movements together to create their own combinations and to ultimately create a very complete performance. We will also discuss the elements of good stage presence and methods to creating a very strong performance persona.

2- Combos and Transitions:

Learn interesting new combinations that really emphasize the “fusion” in tribal fusion bellydance.  Learn how to make your combinations and choreography less predictable by utilizing different planes of space and exploring varied staging options.  Strong emphasis is also placed on creating interesting transitions between combinations to make choreography more varied.  Mini “workshop within the workshop” will consist of several exercises that will help dancers connect to their inner muses and learn effective techniques to generate new choreography.   Great workshop for those who want to be challenged and to be pushed off of their dance plateau!

1- Importance of space in the dance expression

We could define a dancer as an architect of movement in a determined space. The dance space does not serve as a fixed frame but as an intrinsic aspect of artistic expression. Theater, stage or restaurants entail different body perspectives for the artistic representation. Through different combinations, the dancer will be able to acquired needed skills to make the most of different dance spaces. The metaphor of a dancer as an architect will serve as a means to visualize how our own structure (in reference to our bodies) can be modified according to the use of space. This class will be greatly useful for choreographers as well as for those who want to improve their skills as soloists. Intermediate-Advanced level

1- how to fuse Chinese elements to enforce the oriental beauty of bellydance

What is Oriental beauty? How is it possible that the Oriental Dance can be so soft and delicate?

In this class, Estelle will share with you, the result of her collaboration with some of the masters in Traditional Chinese Art Form and also those in the Mastery of Qi, and their research findings into the relation between “Orientalism” in the Middle East and the traditional Chinese “Oriental” culture, the common element in “Oriental beauty”. Using her unique vocabulary in the dance to interpret the music, Estelle shall lead everyone through a series of movements, in order to reflect and demonstrate the Oriental charm of Bellydance.

2 – long tail[veil fan] fan dance

Thanks to Tamalyn Dallal in her Month-long Workshop in Shanghai, Estelle got to see how a common Chinese fan can be used as a prop for Belly dance and the magical effects created when the two is being fused together. The long-tail fan has both the soft fluidity of the veil and the sharp execution of the fan, this is in line with the pursue of firmness and flexibility within the performance realm in dances of the East, and the “Square within a Circle” philosophy of life. Endless inspiration to be experienced with each grab of the fan. In this class, you will learn how to use and manipulate the long-tail fan, how to select various music to show the different characteristic and faces of the long-tail fan [such as a introverted self-contained type, or assertive-expressive type]. This choreography is a mix of both Classical Raks Sharqi technique, with elelments of Egyptian and Tunisian Folk and interpretational nuances (floor work), and the use of “jarras” (vases) as props. The piece can be performed with veils, in lieu of the water vases. Please wear leggings, tights or dance pants, so that you feel comfortable descending to the floor. Bring veils. If you have an unbreakable vase, please bring it as well. I will have some available. Intermediate/Advanced Levels.

This choreography is an inspiration of my own travels and experiences in Cairo, The City Victorious, and it is a Baladi piece with elements of Cuban “Guaguanco” (an Afro-Cuban bi-product of Rhumba) and “Chancleteo” (wooden sandal dance, worn by women in the pre-Castro carnivals in Cuba to “arroyar” (drag-walk), which are also used in Cairo in the hammams (baths). This is a very energetic, invigorating and fun piece – Be sure to nourish yourself well before class and take your vitamins! I advise you to wear dance shoes; ballet slippers; jazz shoes, jazz tennis shoes, etc. I will demonstrate with the wooden sandals. (Bring them, if you have them, but not essential to learn the routine. The music for this number is Egyptian Pop. Intermediate/Advanced levels.
